Weather
In September, Cartagena, Colombia typically experiences warm and humid weather. Temperatures usually range from around 25 to 31º C. It is also the rainy season, so you can expect some rainfall, but usually in short bursts rather than prolonged periods. Overall, it’s still quite warm and tropical, perfect for exploring and enjoying the city!
Clothing
For WEO conferences, we suggest business-casual dress, and for the social programme we recommend smart-casual, unless otherwise stated.
Safety and useful contacts
Cartagena, Colombia is generally considered a safe place; however, as with all tourist destinations, it’s important to remain vigilant and avoid leaving expensive items unattended. Pickpockets often target airports, train stations, and busy tourist sites, so we recommend exercising caution and sticking to well-populated tourist areas to ensure your personal safety.
Emergency services: To contact ambulance or police call 123, to contact fire call 119 from any phone.
Electricity
Volts: The standard voltage in Colombia is 110V at a frequency of 60Hz.
Electric plug/adaptors: Power plug types A and B are used in Colombia (these are plugs with two parallel flat pins, common throughout North America).
Tipping
Tipping is not generally expected in Colombia though it is always appreciated. In smaller cafes and restaurants, and for taxi journeys, it is good practice to round up to the nearest thousand pesos. In high-end restaurants, a 10-15% tip is expected, and this may be automatically added to your bill.
